Information on NC Hospitals
Only licensed hospitals that regularly care for adults with heart attacks, heart failure, and pneumonia are included in this report. This report does not contain information from pediatric, psychiatric, or rehabilitation hospitals. 86 adult general acute care hospitals and 22 critical access hospitals are represented in this report of process measures submitted voluntarily by North Carolina hospitals to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Most reporting hospitals are short-term acute care hospitals that, by providing information on quality measures identified by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS,) become eligible to receive an incentive payment for voluntary submission of data that was established by Section 501(b) of the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA).
Hospital Compare also reflects data submitted voluntarily by critical access hospitals. Critical access hospitals (CAHs) are small, generally geographically remote facilities in rural areas. About half of North Carolina's CAH hospitals reported the CMS measures for two or more conditions. However, CAHs often do not have enough patient volume for meaningful reporting and, therefore, do not submit measures to CMS. Many of the NC CAHs are working on these measures and hope to be included in this report in future updates.
